Essential Dental Care for Your Pets

Dental disease impacts 70-85% of dogs and cats over the age of two, making proper dental care essential for your pet’s overall health. Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most frequent conditions veterinarians encounter. Plaque and tartar buildup on your pet’s teeth can lead to serious health issues, including heart, liver, and kidney disease.

Regular dental exams and cleanings are key to maintaining good oral hygiene, preventing future problems, and reducing the risk of tooth loss and chronic pain. Studies even suggest that maintaining your pet’s dental health may contribute to a longer lifespan.

Signs of Dental Disease in Cats and Dogs

If you observe any of these signs, your pet may need a dental cleaning:

  • Bad breath
  • Sensitivity around the mouth
  • Drooling or dropping food
  • Loose, discolored or tartar-covered teeth
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Difficulty eating or chewing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bleeding from the mouth

Dental Cleanings

To perform a dental cleaning, your pet will need to be under anesthesia. Prior to anesthesia, a blood test is required to identify any underlying health issues.

Maintaining Your Pet’s Oral Health

You can take steps at home to reduce the severity of dental disease:

  • Brush your pet’s teeth daily (be sure to use pet-specific toothbrushes and toothpaste)
  • Provide dental chews or use oral rinses
  • Consider switching to a dental care diet

At Rockdale Animal Hospital, we offer comprehensive pet dental services, including:

  • Dental exams
  • Ultrasonic teeth cleaning
  • Tooth polishing (to prevent plaque and tartar buildup)
  • Digital dental radiology (X-rays)
  • Extractions

If you have concerns about your pet’s oral health or notice any signs of dental disease, please consult with your veterinarian.
