Microchip

The Ultimate Pet ID for safety & peace of mind

Imagine if your dog or cat went missing—having the best chance of bringing them home would be your top priority. With microchipping, you can ensure that chance.

Microchipping is a safe, permanent way to identify your pet if they ever get lost. This tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, is inserted just beneath the skin on the back of your pet's neck. If a lost pet without an ID tag is found, a handheld scanner can detect the chip, which transmits an ID number via a low-frequency radio wave. The vet or shelter then contacts the chip manufacturer to retrieve the owner's information and get in touch.

Even the most responsible pet owners can’t always prevent their pets from getting lost—leashes can break, pets can slip out of doors or windows, or someone might accidentally leave a gate open.

We recommend using both a microchip and a collar with an ID tag to identify your pet. While ID tags with updated contact information are effective, they can fall off, be removed, or be lost. A microchip is permanent and ensures your pet has a much higher chance of being identified and returned home. Pets without microchips that end up in shelters may be adopted out or, in unfortunate cases, euthanized.

Benefits of Microchipping

  • Permanent Identification: Unlike collars or tags, a microchip provides a lifelong, permanent ID for your pet.
  • Increased Reunification Chances: Microchipped pets are far more likely to be reunited with their owners. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 52.2% of microchipped dogs and 38.5% of microchipped cats are returned home, compared to just 21.9% and 1.8% without microchips.
  • Quick and Painless: Microchipping is a quick, minimally painful procedure, similar to getting a routine vaccination, and doesn’t require anesthesia.
  • Proof of Ownership: In cases of theft or disputes, a microchip serves as indisputable proof of ownership.
  • Low Maintenance: Microchips last for life and require no upkeep, but it’s important to keep your contact info current in the database.

Keeping Your Information Up-to-Date

Remember to keep your contact information up to date in the microchip database. If you move or change your phone number, update your details right away. Many microchip companies offer easy online management of your account to ensure your info stays current.
