Pet emergencies are never on the schedule, but being prepared can make all the difference. While first aid isn’t a replacement for professional veterinary care, a few calm, confident steps can help keep your pet safe and comfortable until they can be seen by a veterinarian. 

Think of pet first aid as your “pause button” during a stressful moment. It helps stabilize the situation until you can access veterinary care. 

When a Pet Emergency Strikes: What to Do

1. Take a deep breath and stay calm: Your pet can sense stress instantly. Staying calm helps soothe them—and helps you think clearly. 
2. Check the scene: Before rushing in, make sure everything is safe for both of you. Move your pet away from traffic, sharp objects, toxic foods, or anything else that could cause further harm. 
3. Handle gently: Even the sweetest pets may act defensively when scared or in pain. Use slow movements, a soft voice, and avoid sudden grabbing. 
4. Control bleeding, if needed: If there’s bleeding, apply steady pressure with a clean towel, cloth, or gauze. Don’t worry about making it perfect, gentle pressure matters most. 
5. Keep your pet comfy and still: Limit movement as much as possible, keep your pet warm, and prepare for safe transport to your veterinarian. 

Build a Pet First Aid Kit (Future You Will Thank You) 

Pet emergencies are much easier to handle when supplies are ready to go. A pet first aid kit at home and a smaller one for your car is a simple way to stay prepared. 

Must-Have Pet First Aid Supplies: 

• Gauze pads, bandages & medical tape for covering wounds and controlling bleeding 
• Antiseptic wipes for cleaning minor cuts 
• Tweezers for splinters, ticks, or debris 
• Digital thermometer to check for fever or shock 
• Saline solution for flushing eyes or wounds 
• Disposable gloves to keep things clean for everyone 
• Towel or blanket for warmth, comfort, or safe lifting 

Pro tip: Store your kit somewhere easy to grab and include your veterinarian's details.

When First Aid Isn’t Enough for Your Pet 

First aid is only step one. Immediate veterinary care is critical if your pet shows any of these signs: 

• Trouble breathing 
• Collapse, unconsciousness, or extreme weakness 
• Repeated vomiting or diarrhea 
• Exposure to toxins or unknown substances 
• Signs of intense pain or distress
